EU releases standards for migration of toy specific elements

  On 14 April 2021, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) published the revised version of EN 71-3 for the safety of toys: EN 71-3:19 +A1:2021 "Safety of toys - Part 3: migration of specific elements".


  This revision is related to the migration limit of aluminum, as follows:


  Class I toy materials: aluminum migration limit from 5625 mg/kg to 2250 mg/kg;


  Class II toy materials: aluminum transfer limit from 1406 mg/kg to 560 mg/kg;


  Class III toy materials: Aluminum transfer limit changed from 70,000 mg/kg to 28130 mg/kg


  The new aluminum migration limit will be implemented on May 20, 2021


  Standard EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 will be accorded the status of a national standard of a CEN Member State, with conflicting national standards to be replaced by the end of October 2021 at the latest.


  The standard is expected to be approved by the European Commission and published in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) as a harmonized standard in the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC.
